Indeed violence in Brazil is a regional issue
and not likely to be sorted out any time soon.
60.000 people are murdered in Brazil each year
but the people are used to live with the violence. They are resignated. The government
meanwhile goes on a television each time there is a crime that the media covers and promises
each time to solve the matter. But everybody knows that the government will do nothing . Why ? Simply because of the corruption. Rio has
12 batalions of military police. Each one has a
coronel to lead it. Each coronel is corrupt and
makes money from protection, prostitution, gambling and drug traficking. I was General Manager of a medium size company a few years ago. I had an armed driver and an armed guard.
A very nice fellow he told me that indeed the
police goes up into the favellas and kills one
gangster from time to time. But he also told me
that on week ends the police join the drug dealers over lunch. !!! Any illusions left ?
